~ PAST NEWS ~

Thursday 7pm on March 19, 2015, Plowman Chamber Music Competition will present renowned Russian pianist SERGEI BABAYAN in a solo piano recital in Columbia, Missouri.
About pianist Sergei Babayan: "Sergei Babayan began his career in the United States, Japan, and the UK, winning several consecutive prizes in major international competitions, including the Cleveland, Hamamatsu, and Scottish international competitions. As soloist, he has performed with the Mariinsky Theater, London, Cleveland, Baltimore, Detroit, BBC Scottish, and New World symphony orchestras, the Warsaw and Rotterdam philharmonic orchestras, and the Orchestre National de Lille. He has collaborated with conductors Valery Gergiev, Yuri Temirkanov, David Robertson, Neeme Järvi, Tugan Sokhiev, Hans Graf, and Kazimierz Kord, among others. Mr. Babayan is a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory and has studied with Georgy Sarajev, Vera Gornostayeva, Lev Naumov, and Mikhail Pletnev. His deep interest and love for the music of Bach led him to study with Helmuth Rilling, and he also studied conducting in order to deepen his orchestral understanding. Mr. Babayan’s concerto repertoire includes 54 concertos, and he has made several highly-praised recordings for EMC, Connoisseur Society, Pro Piano, and Mariinsky labels. As a soloist and chamber musician, Mr. Babayan has appeared at numerous major music festivals, including Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Salzburg Festival, Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam, Stars of White Nights in St. Petersburg, and Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano. Among his chamber music partners are Martha Argerich, Daniil Trifonov, Ivry Gitlis, and the Borodin Quartet. He has made numerous appearances with Valery Gergiev in recent years in the most prestigious venues. Their live performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 5 was recorded for Medici TV. Mr. Babayan will remain as the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Gilliam Artist-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music."

Subject: RE: MMAMTA Reminders - March 31, 2014
Dear MMAMTA Members:
Hope your spring is going well as we barrel towards the end of another busy year.
Reminder that this Friday, May 9 is our MMAMTA Annual Spring Luncheon and Meeting at the Golden China Restaurant in Jefferson City (2021 Missouri Blvd) at 11am. Note that this is a change from the original date listed in the handbook. At this meeting, Paola Savvidou will be taking over as MMAMTA President, so I'd just like to say how much I've enjoyed serving you all during my tenure.
I'd also like to mention that at this meeting, we'll already start going over events and dates for the coming year, so if you are a chair of an event, please be prepared with a summary of the event from 2013-14, and try and nail down date/venue for the coming year. Since the handbook get made during August, it would be great if all members can renew with MTNA (don't forget to also renew the MMAMTA affiliation along with MMTA) by the official July 1 start of the year, and get all handbook dates and venues of MMAMTA events to Paola Savvidou (Savvidoup@missouri.edu) by August 1.
Note that we are looking for members to fill several key positions (including Vice-President, President-Elect, and possibly chairs of publicity, website, and Evaluative Auditions Columbia for Fall 2014). I urge you all to get involved! If interested in a position, feel free to contact me or Paola.
If you have any additional items for the agenda, let us know as well.
Best,
Peter Miyamoto, MMAMTA President

Subject: MMAMTA This Weekend Events and a call for Fall Workshop ideas
Dear MMAMTA Members:
This weekend we are lucky to have pianist Bo Tang, on faculty at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, presenting a master class and recital in Whitmore Recital Hall at MU. Attached are posters of his activities including his recital bio and program (Haydn, Liszt Mephisto, Mendelssohn Variations Serieuses, and Prokofiev Sonata No. 6). The master class will include Beethoven Op. 31, No. 1 and Op. 31, No. 3 as well as Brahms Ballade Op. 118, No. 3 and Chopin Ballade No. 1.
The events are:
Saturday, April 12 at 11:00am Bo Tang Master Class
Sunday, April 13 at 3:30pm Bo Tang Recital
and are both in WHitmore Recital Hall. Hope you all can make these events.
Good luck to participants of the MMAMTA Camp and Collegiate Scholarship Auditions this weekend. Also, remember that April 12 is the deadline for applying for the MMAMTA Student Concerto Festival to take place on May 3 at Piano Distributors in Columbia (Beverly Kyriakos, chair).
Finally, reminder that the MMAMTA Spring Luncheon has been moved from May 30 as listed in the handbook to FRIDAY, MAY 9 at 11:00am at the Golden China Restaurant in Jefferson City (2021 Missouri Blvd). Please make not of this change and try and attend this important meeting when Paola Savvidou will take over as President.
If anyone has a potential guest artist clinician for the Fall Workshop, it would be great to hear ideas so we can discuss at the meeting. Let me know if anyone comes to mind!
All the Best,
Peter Miyamoto

Greetings To All! Hope your 2014 is going well! It seems to be just flying by!
LOOKING BACK:
I big thank you to all the participants in the January 26 Annual MMAMTA Teachers Recital and Meeting. Ruth - thank you so much for organizing it all. I thought it was a wonderful diverse program, with organ, voice, and a great mix of solos, duos and two-piano performances.
The meeting that followed recapped our organizations last period, and looked forward to events in the future. Reminder that we are looking for members who would be willing to fill the President-Elect and Vice-President positions for the 2014-15 year.
Also, because Paola Savvidou, who will be taking over the organization's presidency at the next meeting, would have been unable to attend, we have decided to move the MMAMTA Annual Spring Luncheon from May 30 as listed in the handbook, to FRIDAY, MAY 9 AT 11:00AM at the Golden China Restaurant in Jefferson City (2021 Missouri Blvd). Please make not of the change and try to attend this important meeting!
Looking Forward:
Reminder that this weekend is the MMAMTA Musicathon event in Columbia at Macy's (201 N. Stadium, Columbia, MO). Performances run Saturday, 2/22 from 10am-9pm, and Sunday, 2/23 from 11:30-5:00pm. Funds raised benefit the MMAMTA Music Scholarships as well as the Arts Programs at the Boy's and Girl's Club of Columbia.
The Jefferson City Musicathon will be held on March 1 and March 2 at Capital Mall, and performances will benefit our scholarships as well as the Samaritan Center in Jeff City.
Get out to these events, enjoy some music, and donate to a great cause!
Also this Weekend:
Following the highly successful Odyssey Chamber Music Series Kids at Heart: Carnival of the Pianists concert in January that featured many MMAMTA teachers and students performing, the next concert in the Odyssey Chamber Music Series' 10th Anniversary Season is this Friday, February 21 at 7pm at First Baptist Church in Columbia, and features guest artists from Italy including harpsichordist Enrico Baiano and flutist Roberto Maggio. The All-Bach program includes the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, Cantata No. 68, as well as a flute and harpsichord sonata and a selection from the Well-Tempered Clavier. Paul Crabb will conduct the Odyssey Chamber Ensemble and Bach Collegium Choir in this wonderful music ($20 general admission, $10 students).
Other Upcoming Concerts:
Feb 20-22 at 7:30pm and Feb 23 at 2pm, Central Methodist University Opera Workshop Production - Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Little Theatre, CMU Fayette campus
Saturday, Feb 22, 7:30pm, Whitmore - Baroque Chamber Music with Enrico Baiano, Roberto Maggio, Rob Shay and others
Sunday, Feb 23, 8:00pm, Whitmore - Bassoon Recital with MU Faculty member Elizabeth Roberts and pianist Paola Savvidou

Subject: MMAMTA Newsletter - Happy 2014!!!
Dear MMAMTA Members:
As we start a new year, I hope you and your loved ones look back on 2013 with many cherished memories filled with family, friends, fun, and of course fantastic music, and are looking forward to even more of the same throughout 2014!
A quick reminder that Sunday, January 26 is the MMAMTA Teachers' Recital and Semi-Annual Meeting. The recital takes place at 3:00pm at Broadway Christian Church (2601 West Broadway St/ Columbia, MO 65203), with our semi-annual meeting to follow (approximately 4pm). I think it is so important for us teachers to keep performing (hey, if we make our students go through it, we should too!), and this is a friendly environment to bring out old favorites, or challenge yourself with new repertoire! Ruth Robertson is chair of the event, and will send out an invitation eminently.
Also a reminder that even before the Teachers' Recital, we have a FANTASTIC collaboration between MMAMTA, the Odyssey Chamber Music Series, and the Music Education area of the MU School of Music. On Saturday, January 18 at 3pm a concert aimed at children of all ages will take place at First Baptist Church in Columbia (1112 E. Broadway, Columbia 65201). There will be an instrument petting zoo from 2pm, followed by the concert, which features a menagerie of students and teachers from various MMAMTA member studios performing Camille Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals complete with a chamber ensemble and the Peter Schickele narration. This fun-filled concert will be rounded out by Greek composer Nikolas Sideris' Piano Stories for one piano, four hands (performed by MMAMTA President-Elect Paola Savvidou and her husband, Jonathan Kuuskoski), as well as Johnny Appleseed: the Fun Variations for Kazoo and Piano by MU Alum Patrick Dell!, performed by the composer (on kazoo) and former MMAMTA President, Ayako Tsuruta. It will be a fun event for kids of all ages, so get the word out, and bring your students! Admission is free!
Don't forget the deadline to request a Musicathon time is Feb 1 for the February 22 and 23 event at Macy's Columbia (Paola Savvidou, Chair) and the March 1 and 2 event at Capital Mall in Jefferson City (Jan Houser, chair). Funds raised will be split between MMAMTA Scholarships and a local charity (the Boys and Girls Club of Missouri - Columbia location in support of their arts and music program for Columbia, and the Samaritan Center for the Jefferson City Event). I've attached posters for you all to put in your studios - perhaps put a donation fishbowl out in your studio and see if donations come in - remember the $$$ helps MMAMTA Scholarship funds!
Good luck to all winners of the MTNA Competitions now competing in the West Central Division Competition in Des Moines, Iowa on Jan 10-12. I'm going to brave the cold and travel with the MU participants, so see you up there if you are going! Also, best of luck to all of you preparing students for the Missouri Federation of Music Clubs Student Auditions - don't forget to get your applications in by January 10th! For those of you with students playing a full concerto, don't forget that the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra Piano Auditions take place on Feb 1 at Lincoln University (application deadline Jan 20). Entrants perform the entire work with a second piano (they must supply their own accompanist), and the winner receives a $500 honoarirum and performs their concerto with the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra on May 13, 2014.
On behalf of the MMAMTA Officers, I wish you all the Best Wishes for the New Year to the MMAMTA Membership. I hope your 2014 is full of beauty and inspiration as we continue to lead the next generation of young musicians on their musical journeys.
Best,
Peter Miyamoto,

TO ALL:
Good luck to all with students entering MMTA or MTNA competition next week at Washington University in St. Louis. See you there!
Reminder that the Evaluative Audition Application is due - TODAY!!! Please enter students - it is a great event (in both Columbia and Jefferson City), and it generates revenue for our MMAMTA Scholarships.
Got a request to send out invitation to the Columbia Civic Orchestra concert next Saturday in Missouri Theatre. It features pianist John Orfe in Bartok Piano Concerto No. 2
The Jefferson City Orchestra just got me their piano concerto competition application form. I usually include that in the MMAMTA Handbook, but I contacted them in August, and I only got the application form yesterday.
Member Helen Haynes also wanted me to forward you information for a new composition competition.
NOTICE: My term as president of the organization runs through the spring, and I happily will serve out my term. From the May meeting, Paola Savvidou will take over as President. I have decided that I do not have the time to create the MMAMTA Handbook and Directory, and am stepping down from the MMAMTA Handbook Chair at that time too. In other words, we will need someone to collate the information and create the annual handbook. We will discuss this at the January Semi-Annual Meeting, but wanted to give people time to consider taking over this position. If you are interested, please contact me via email.
Can you believe it is November? Hope you all had a happy Halloween!

Dear MMAMTA Members:
Can you believe we are in October now? Seems like September just went by in a flash!
Looking Back – September
I hope you all enjoyed the Marvin Blickenstaff Fall Workshop! Despite being a Football weekend, I thought turn out was great (my tally was 33 people). Thanks again to Beverly (and Charlie) for opening their studio and home, and to the MMTA Matching Grant Program for helping out with expenses (especially since the football weekend hiked up the hotel costs enormously!). I thought Marvin was as inspirational as always - what a great way to start the teaching year.
Congratulations to all of you with students who participated in the MMTA Pre-Collegiate District Auditions this past weekend. For those of you going on to the state auditions at Washington University in November, don't forget that the deadline for applying for state is this coming Monday, Oct 7.
Present Tense / Immediate Future
Again, remember that student who passed to MMTA State Audition must apply by Monday, October 7 (postmark). Teachers of Pre-Collegiate students who received "1" ratings must fill out Form C and mail with one check made out to MMTA ($35/student; $20 teacher fee) to Sue Knutson, who is filling in as MMTA Pre-Collegiate Chair for Sara Steele-Miller, who has had to step down due to illness (we wish her well). Information is available on missourimta.org website at:
http://www.missourimta.org/pre-collegiate-auditions/
Also in the immediate future, this coming Saturday, October 5th is a busy day:
1. Good luck to all of you with student performing in the Women's Symphony League's Missouri Symphony Society Fall Showcase Auditions.
2. On October 5th, I am also presenting an interesting recital with violinist Stephanie Sant'Ambrogio at MU's Whitmore Recital Hall, 7:30pm including Bach Violin and Piano Sonata, and works by Brahms, Richard Strauss, Lutoslawski and Fazil Say.
3. Finally, throughout the day, Paola Savvidou is organizing a series of Wellness Workshops presented in part by the MMCC (Mid-Missouri Collegiate Chapter), including workshops in Mindful Stress Reduction, Heart-rate Variability Monitoring, Yoga Nidra and Zumba. While these events are pretty much at full capacity, if there is interest from our organization, perhaps we can look into organizing something similar for our membership in the future.
Future Tense
MMAMTA HONORS RECITALS
For those of you with students who earned "1" ratings at District Pre-Collegiate Auditions, or those of you with Collegiate students going to MMTA State Auditions, MMAMTA holds Honors Recitals to give additional performance experience as they prepare:
1. MMAMTA Honors Recital I - Saturday, October 26 from 2pm at First Baptist Church in Columbia (1112 E. Broadway). If you have students interested in participating, contact Ayako Tsuruta by email (atsuruta at aol dot com) no later than Friday, October 18th.
2. MMAMTA Honors Recitals II - Sunday, November 3 at 1:30pm and 3:00pm at Columbia College's new performance space, Bixby Hall in the Science Building. If you have students interested in participating, contact Beverly Kyriakos (beverlykyriakos at gmail dot com) no later than Friday, October 25th.
Please Note: The second Honors Recital is listed correctly in the Programs Calendar, 2013-14 section of the Handbook (2013-14 MMAMTA Handbook, page 12). It is listed incorrectly in the Classical Music Concerts in Columbia and Jefferson City section (Handbook, page 19) as occurring on Saturday November 2 from 1pm at FBC - a Saturday, Nov 2 event will not happen.
MMTA State Auditions, 2013 - Washington University, November 6-10
From the missourimta.org website:
Hotel is the Sheraton in Clayton 63105 (5-8 minutes away from the music building).
For a reservation, just mention MMTA. 1-800-325-3535 www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton
The music building is close to, but NOT on the main WU campus. The exact address is: 560 Music Center, 560 Trinity Avenue, St. louis, MO 63130. Everything for auditions is held in this building which has its own parking lot of maybe 24-30 spaces, with free street parking around the building. Nearby is a business district with metered parking and some free lots. The lots are an easy walk to the building.
Looking Even Further Ahead
Other Events in November
MMAMTA's Evaluative Auditions deadline remains November 1st for both the Columbia and Jefferson City events (information available on pages 25-30 of the handbook). The Jefferson City event will take place on Saturday, November 23 at Lincoln University. New this year: the Columbia event will be scheduled on both Friday afternoon, November 22 and Saturday morning, November 23. $20 entrance fee.
Note: The MU Faculty Recital of Paola Savvidou and Jonathan Kuuskoski, piano duet: Music by Living Composers, has been rescheduled from Saturday Nov 16 to Tuesday, November 12 at 8:30pm in Whitmore Recital Hall at the MU School of Music.
All the Best,

2013 Fall Workshop with Marvin Blickenstaff
September 7, Sunday 9:15am-2:30pm
Pictured below are mostly MMAMTA members, with visiting guests including MU students from Piano Pedagogy and non-member local teachers. Our events are usually open to EVERYONE who loves music! Thank you for sharing your day with us.
September 2013 Message from the President

2013 Fall Workshop SCHEDULE
Dear MMAMTA Members:
Welcome to another year! I'm looking forward to serving you as the organization's president for a final year before our President-Elect, Paola Savvidou takes hold of the reigns. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any information, or have any questions about the organization.
MARVIN BLICKENSTAFF WORKSHOP - THIS WEEKEND
As you know, our Fall Workshop with Marvin Blickenstaff is this Saturday, September 7 at 9:00am at the Kyriakos Studio (THANK YOU - Beverly and Charlie). I'm attaching a poster for the event that has the full program (see left). Do consider carpooling as parking is limited.
Non-members are welcome for a $10 fee, but we are trying to keep track of numbers, so if you know someone is coming, let me know by email (miyamotop@missouri.edu). Don't forget to bring your potluck lunch item!!!
And again, thank you to the MMTA Matching Grant program that provided funds towards this event!
MMAMTA HANDBOOKS
Handbooks are created and going to print as we speak. Forgive me for any inaccuracies or misinformation - there are bound to be some - but let me know when you find them and I will keep the website version up to date and try and get the word out through newsletters or special bulletins! For those of you who indicated that you would pick up hardcopies at the workshop, I will have one with your name on it there. For those of you who indicated you wanted them mailed, I hope to get those out in the next few days. You may still request a hard copy, but we are not making enough for the entire membership - we find plenty of members are finding it easier to access the information on the mmamta.org website.
A note on two of the handbook's sections: In consultation with Karen Larvick, chair of the Camp Scholarships event, some changes were made to that event. These will be talked about at the January 26 Semi-Annual Meeting and approved before being finalized, but in the interest of expediency I included the revisions in the handbook. Likewise, I revised the Chair Descriptions now that we have some new positions and have gotten rid of some others. I hope to also use part of the January meeting to approve those as well.

Hope you can come out and enjoy.

February 2013 Message from the President

February 21, 2013 - Winter Storm Q!
Fri, Feb 22, 2013 10:59 pm
MMAMTA Newsletter, February 2013
Dear MMAMTA Members:
Looking Back – January/February
It has almost been a month since MMAMTA kicked off the calendar year with the terrific MMAMTA Teachers’ Recital, which included performances by members Susan Quigley-Duggan, Meg Gray, Karen Larvick, Peter Miyamoto, Jennifer Muniz, Ruth Robertson, Paola Savvidou, and Tim Werts, and guest spouse Jonathan Kuuskoski! Bravo to all for wonderful Mostly Mozart performances. A nice audience filled Jefferson City’s First Christian Church. Thanks to Ruth Robertson for organizing this event’s third edition, and Gretchen Huedepohl for helping to procure the venue.
Our organization’s semi-annual meeting took place right after the concert. Thank you to all who were willing to stay after the concert and share your thoughts on a wide range of topics. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 31 in Columbia. Look for more information on that over the coming months.
Present Tense – MUSICATHON WEEKEND
Musicathon 2013 is upon us – February 23rd and 24th at Macy’s of Columbia and Capital Mall in Jefferson City. Student and Member performances at these music marathons will help raise funds for the MMAMTA Student and Camp Scholarships as well as the Samaritan Center (Jefferson City), and the Red Cross (Columbia).* Please come out and support this great fundraiser! Many thanks to Jan Houser, Chris Vitt and Paola Savvidou for all their help in organizing this event, and to Piano Distributors for their support, as well as all participating MMAMTA Studios.
We are now making an effort to document all our events. If you make a program for your segment of the marathon, can you please send a copy (probably electronic is easiest) to the appropriate Musicathon chair. Jan, Chris and Paola/can you compile the programs along with a schedule of all the studio blocks and forward to Nancy?
*Columbia fundraising was originally going to be directed toward the MTNA Recovery Fund, but due to the generosity of MTNA members, state affiliates and local associations, MTNA was able to give grants of $1,000 to those individuals who requested disaster assistance from MTNA and have taken the drive off their website. In place of this charity, Musicathon Columbia will support Hurricane Sandy Relief through the Red Cross.

Dear MMAMTA Members:
Happy Columbus Day! It has been a busy month!
First (long overdue), I want to thank all of you who made the Amy Greer MMAMTA Fall Workshop such a great success. By all the comments I’ve received from members, I think it was extremely informative and enjoyable (who knew it was so difficult to walk and clap at the same time!). Thanks especially to Beverly Kyriakos (and Charlie) for opening their BEAUTIFUL home for the event, to Denise, Jan, Ruth and Paola for their help in organizing the event, and to all the members who brought such yummy dishes!
PLEASE NOTE (ERRATA):
In the PROGRAMS CALENDAR section of the handbook, the Federation events in March 2013 need some clarification:
The March 2 Federation Festival event at Columbia College is a junior festival (gold cup) event whose parallel Jefferson City event takes place on Saturday, March 9 at First Christian Church in Jefferson City (correctly listed). The JEFFERSON CITY event listed on March 2 (Sat) is the NFMC State Auditions for collegiate students. In that entry, I think I might have confused people by incorrectly including the term “Federation Festival” – strike that!!! Hope it’s clear now.
REMINDERS:
MMAMTA Honors Recitals are set up for October 21 (contact Beverly Kyriakos) and October 27 (contact Ayako Tsuruta) at First Baptist Church in Columbia.
The 2013-2014 Odyssey Concert Series kicks off on Friday, October 12 with a program including Beethoven, Ravel, Saint-Saens, Schoenberg and Liebermann ($20/$10). Check out further listings of the Music and New Media at the Crossroads October 2012 Festival and other events in the Classical Music Listing of the Handbook!
CONGRATULATIONS:
1. Congratulations to all teachers with students who passed District Auditions, and good luck at the State Auditions at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Nov 8-11. Reminder that you must enroll your students by 5pm today, and that your registration and check must be postmarked by tomorrow, Tuesday, October 9 (MMTA is giving us the extra day since today is a federal holiday).
2. Congratulations also to all teachers with students competing in the Women’s Symphony League/Missouri Symphony Society’s Fall Piano Showcase Auditions this past weekend. Reminder to send in the bio for the concert by Oct 29, and good luck at the Nov 13 rehearsal and Nov 17th event in Missouri Theatre.
3. Congratulations to so many of our members with recitals and performances in the last few weeks (Janice Wenger, Jackie Lordo and Jennifer Muniz, Ayako Tsuruta, Judy Shaw, Tim Howe, Susan Jensen and Eva Szekely with the Esterhazy Quartet). Don’t be shy, if I’ve inadvertently left your upcoming concert out of the Handbook, feel free to contact me (MiyamotoP@missouri.edu) and I will try to include it in a future newsletter, or on the up-to-date website version of the handbook.
Best of luck with all the preparations for MMTA and MTNA Auditions and MOSS Showcase!
